"This bilingual Ukrainian-English collection brings together major works by Mykola (Nik) Bazhan, one of the most important Ukrainian poets of the twentieth century. As he moved from futurism to neoclassicism, symbolism to socialist realism, Bazhan consistently displayed a creative approach to theme, versification and vocabulary. Many poems from his three remarkable early collections (1926, 1927, and 1929) remain unknown to readers, both in Ukraine and the West. Because Bazhan was later forced into the straightjacket of officially sanctioned socialist realism, his early poetry has been neglected. This collection makes these outstanding works available for the first time"

"Making Ukraine Soviet examines the process of cultural sovietisation in Ukraine during the interwar years. Engaging with a wide range of primary and secondary sources, including literary and archival material, Palko grounds her argument in the cases of poet Pavlo Tychna and prosaist Mykola Khyl'ovyi. Through this unique biographical lens, Palko's skilled analysis of cultural construction sheds fresh light on the complex process of establishing the Soviet regime in Ukraine and offers both a timely re-assessment of the Russo-Ukrainian conflict and the relationship between national identity, the arts, and the Soviet state"--

In the present study the first chapter deals with the biography of Chvyl'ovyj's open and controversially discussed questions. Against this background, a biographical sketch of its own arises through the critical comparison of previously published biographical material. The following chapter on Chvyl'ovyj's journalism will be preceded by an outline of literary politics in Ukraine in the 1920s. This section, which is supplemented with corresponding passages in the biography, presents in a cross-section the representatives and programs of the Ukrainian literary associations and the course of the literary discussion, with emphasis on Chvyl'ovyj's activities. This background is crucial for the understanding of Chvyl'ovyj's journalism, which is also examined in the third chapter from the perspective of Spengler reception.
